Catching up once again with Russ, he’s home for the winter, playing cat and mouse with forecasts, working with tides, winds, and chasing what he can before it fizzes out. With a film deadline looming, he’s been squeezing in trips wherever he can. “Just trying to make the most of it before the cut-off,” he said. “AK and I are putting something together. It’s coming together pretty quick.” AK, better known as Andrew Kaineder, is a longtime friend and filmer—someone Russ has shared more than a few heavy sessions with over the years. In between those missions, he’s also been chipping away at some R&D with the crew at Ocean & Earth, work that’s shaping up nicely, albeit very hush-hush for now.
Toby Mossop is the kind of surfer who thrives where most would hesitate — deep in the zone, chasing slabs, or laughing in the face of a flogging. Whether it’s paddling into isolated bombs in South Oz or getting rinsed at Shippies, his commitment to pushing boundaries is grounded in core friendships, a quiet determination, and a willingness to take the hits. In this piece, we unpack two trips that shaped him — one forged through years of friendship and grit, the other through cold, hard lessons on Tasmania’s wildest stage.
Throughout his teens, Bronson Meydi was described as the best 11, 13 and 15-year-old surfer on the planet. When he was crowned as the 2025 World Junior Champion in the Philippines and then surfed in the CT in Abu Dhabi, his progression has shown no sign of slowing down as he turned 20. With time spooling as fast as his rotations, for this story, we thought we’d stop the projector, catch up, start at the end and work our way back. How did a shy grom from Lakey Peak take over the surfing world? He walks through his life, in reverse, here.
When we caught up with Russell Bierke back home in Ulladulla, he was, once again, in recovery mode. Fresh off broken ribs and a bruised sternum at JAWS, he’d just added a broken nose to the collection—this time courtesy of a local mysto bombie. Stitched up but in good spirits, Russ took a moment to reflect on his latest cold-water strike mission to the emerald edge of the world: Ireland.
